Building Dreams from Zero: Stories from Students

Teach For Thailand (TFT) and its Fellows firmly believe in the potential of Thai children and youth, working tirelessly to ensure equitable education so they can choose their own futures. One such individual who has charted their own path is “Tawan,” a former runaway student who studied with “Kru Pao” – Nopardol Bootsatorn, a TFT alumnus from cohort 5.

Tawan began to open up to Kru Pao after they bonded over playing the mobile game ‘Arena of Valor (RoV).’ From that moment, Tawan not only engaged more with academic content but also became involved in extracurricular activities. This resulted in a noticeable improvement in his academic performance.

“Without Kru Pao, Tawan would have been lonely,” said Tawan’s aunt. “Since Kru Pao started working with him, Tawan has improved in every way: his academics, his involvement in activities—he participated in every competition Kru Pao organized.”

Tawan also joined Kru Pao’s photography club, and today, he applies those skills as a photographer for the Division of Civil Affairs at the Sattahip Naval Base.

Another example is “Pun,” a former student of “Kru Pu” – Rapat Chamnaekwong and “Kru Fluke” – Jirawut Jitjak, TFT alumni from cohort 6.

When Pun started middle school, he had no clear life goals. He felt restricted by various social norms. However, meeting the two teachers changed his outlook.

“My perspective changed after I met Kru Fluke and Kru Pu. They constantly encouraged me to explore new things and to push beyond limitations. I learned so much, from daily life skills to broader topics like politics and globalization. The school became more than just a place,” Pun explained.

Pun became the first alumnus of his school to be accepted at Thammasat University, where he chose to study Social Work—an option suggested by his two teachers.

“They asked me about my passions and suggested, ‘You should try the Faculty of Social Work’—that pushed me to explore. I don’t know if it’s the best fit for me yet, but their advice gave me the courage to try.”

The stories of Tawan and Pun show how access to education and opportunities can transform lives. They demonstrate that when adults believe in them, Thai children and youth demonstrate the vast potential they hold.
